General Forming Corporation (GFC) manufactures and supplies the DW-1 & DW-2 Rudder Hinge Bracket Kits which were originally designed and produced by engineer Dick Wilson in 1996. These parts were created in response to Airworthiness Directive (AD) 93-24-03 (dated 1/21/94) which requires periodic inspections for rudder spar cracks, and provides relief from this requirement if SMP brackets are installed (see the AD for further details).
The DW brackets were created as a much-improved and lower priced option to the SMP brackets. However, the AD was not revised accordingly and instead the FAA issued a letter to authorize the substitution.
There is a statement in the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) that AD requirements are not relieved by the STC. This simply means: AD provisions are in ADs, not STCs. (Several customers have inquired about this)
When purchasing the DW-1 and/or DW-2 Rudder Hinge Bracket Kits all pertinent documentation, STC, FAA issued letter and installation instructions will be provided with the parts.
GFC manufactured these kits for Mr. Wilson up through his passing. Prior to his passing, Mr. Wilson transferred the design patent to a dear friend and associate of GFC. We continue to provide these parts today as a service to the Beechcraft Community and to help ensure aircraft stay in the air.
